KILL YOUR DARLING
In 1990 the headless and handless body of a female was found in the Westersingel Canal, right in the heart of Rotterdam. The identity of the woman was never established, and her killer was never found.
In 2008 DNA samples lead police to believe the identity of the female was Melissa Halstead, an American photomodel who had gone missing in 1992.
An exhumation was performed, and we started filming. I was curious to see how police would reconstruct a murderous past after 18 years. Would it be possible to reconstruct events after such a long period of time?
A suspect was quickly located: John Sweeney, a Liverpudlian carpenter and an artist. And Melissa's former boyfriend.
We have followed police investigations in The Netherlands and the UK for three years. Until the 2011 trial in London, in an Old Bailey court room.
And then everything changed. I received a a letter from John Sweeney. Not much later the phone rang,
A tale about reconstructing the past and the hunt for the evidence of murder.
